Public Health England published a survey this summer that revealed that 40% of adults in England gained weight over the pandemic. The average weight gain was half a stone – and that was before Christmas!
Stuck at home, snacking and comfort eating were cited by about half of the 5,000 people surveyed as the main causes of the extra pounds.
Takeaways were also a main culprit: food delivery company Just Eat reported a 76% increase in orders during the first six months of Covid restrictions. Just Eat said people were eating takeaways more often, with the average customer ordering more than three times a month, compared with 2.5 times in 2020.
And gyms were shut!
