Looking for inspiration to join a personal training gym? Meet John
John is an 80-year-old, inspirational grandfather of six and great grandfather of two from Chelmsford. He joined Bee-Fit personal training gym in January, responding to an advertisement in the Essex Chronicle for a week’s free trial. He plucked up the courage to pop by and, five months on, he’s a popular, regular member.
Bee-Fit: Why did you join Bee-Fit?
John:I lost my wife five years ago. We were married for 54 years. When she died, quite suddenly, I didn’t cope well. I lost all get up and go, got lethargic and very down. I realised I needed to do something about that. I wanted to lose a bit of weight and get myself going again. Bee-Fit is near where I live and when I saw the ad for personal training in the local paper, I decided to go and take a look.
Bee-Fit: What did you think when you came by?
John:I was really apprehensive at first and was worried that the gym would just be for young people and that I’d feel out of place. But I was pleasantly surprised. There are all ages at Bee-Fit, including lots of retired people. I didn’t feel out of place at all and it was really nice to meet new people of all ages. I’ve been really lonely since I lost my wife. Bee-Fit is so friendly – the other members and the personal trainers – it helps.
Bee-Fit: What benefits have you noticed since joining the club?
John: I feel alive. I have a muscle-wasting condition but, since being at the gym, I have noticed my arms bulking up and my body becoming much more toned. My shoulder pain has also improved. I had lots of aches and pains before and they’ve all gone plus my blood pressure has gone down and I just feel much stronger and healthier. I used to be really strong and had a physical job before I retired so it feels great to know it’s never too late to improve your fitness. I have a benign lump on my spine so I have to be careful but the personal trainers work around that so I always feel safe. Joining Bee-Fit also spurred me on to eat more healthily.
Bee-Fit: How often do you train?
I come down three times a week. I train after 11am and before 4pm during the week so I benefit from an off-peak membership. When I started, I had to really make myself leave the house to go to the gym but now I really look forward to it.
Bee-Fit:We hear you’re famous worldwide?!
John: Yes! I featured on a Bee-Fit Facebook Live video and my grandson saw it in Australia! I got a message from him saying “Good on you grandad, put a drop of rum in your protein drink!”
