After forcing Daniel Svensson to play almost every minute this season, Borussia Dortmund have finally secured left-back depth. 17-year-old Kauã Prates will be joining Borussia Dortmund from Cruzeiro this summer. The Brazilian left-back made his professional debut at 16 and has played just shy of 900 minutes across the last year-and-a-half. Despite his relatively brief time on the pitch, Prates has earned plaudits from across Brazil and abroad. Cruizeiro’s former coach, Leonardo Jardim, described as “a player with several important factors. In addition to technical quality, he has great physical quality: he is strong and has a good wingspan. In technical terms, he is a player with a well defined style who excels at crossing. He is a balanced full-back that all coaches like.” High praise from the coach who gave Kylian Mbappe his professional debut!

Prates is definitely a player for the future but few cannot image him being locked out of the first team for long. Despite Daniel Svensson’s success, every report seems to indicate him as a high floor and high ceiling player who is expected to contribute. Current reporting indicates that Prates signed for just 7 million euros, with an addition 5 million in conditional payments. He signed a 5-year contract through 2032.

He now joins Justin Lerma as the second summer signing for Borussia Dortmund. Interesting enough, Prates and Lerma are joining a core of players born in 2008 alongside Luca Reggiani and Samuele Inacio, who has been the bench across the past few matches. Prates’s signing could indicate a return to youth approach and Dortmund dipping back into the South American market.
