Period 1

Right by the net, you can argue that you want Smith just to jam it from time to time, instead of forcing a soft pass to Celebrini on weak side that gets intercepted. Don’t want to take Smith’s instincts away, but changing up attack expectations from time to time isn’t bad, and speaks to the directness that San Jose Sharks could use. Start the game with a shot, maybe surprise Dostal.

Carlsson goal: Dellandrea will get roasted (and got roasted by Carlsson), but how did he end up as the defenseman there? Kreider made a really nice behind-the-back stationary exit pass to Carlsson, but I don’t think Leddy should’ve bit on that. Pinching is good, but that wasn’t the moment to do it. Anyway, Leddy committed, backchecking Misa ran into him, and Murder, Leo Wrote.

Carlson goal: Misa was just rocked by Sennecke in corner. But actually, made the play to Toffoli on the wall. Soft Toffoli clear doesn’t get out though. No one, youngsters or vets, doing it for the San Jose Sharks right now. Moving screen in front of Askarov, tough to pick up, and Carlson picks a corner too. Disastrous start.

9 in: Sharks outshot 7-0 so far. Not to go back to the Smith play earlier, on a better team, that’s not a big deal, but on this team, that’s still be San Jose Sharks’ best opportunity to shoot so far tonight, I think. That was time and situation, start the game off with a perfectly good chance, maybe not a Grade-A, but good shooting area.

5 left: Celebrini line finally gets some shots off, all from distance, but it’s a start. Still just a 2-0 game.

San Jose starting to find a little game, Orlov had a shot from high, high slot that deflected dangerously. Keep firing, keep crashing net.

1 left: Oh man, Celebrini got a good bounce going downhill in slot. What a play by Poehling, dove to prevent Celebrini from getting ahold of it.

Period 2

Killorn goal: What a turn of events. San Jose Sharks’ forecheck actually gets something going, Wennberg sets up Dickinson for a one-timer…and Dickinson shanks it. His buddy Sennecke picks it up, off on a clear-cut 2-on-1. Sennecke patience, outwaits Leddy starfish, and fortunate too, his pass bounces off Leddy, Askarov too, and Killorn scores a gimme. Gotta feel for Sam there, who’s had a couple rough nights.

10 in: San Jose Sharks look like they’re just spent. Blame the schedule if you want. Most back-to-back’s in NHL, right? But something a better team would grind through.

7 left: Celebrini line fiddles the puck around but no shot.

6 left: Carlsson just rips it from Sherwood at center ice, breakaway, big Askarov save.

2 left: San Jose Sharks starting to attack downhill, think Wennberg set up Desharnais for probably their best chance of the game. Big Dostal save.

Period 3

5 in: Viel down after blocking a shot.

7 in: Askarov stops Kreider on the breakaway. Desharnais knew Kreider behind him but couldn’t stop the pass. I think Sharks selling out a little for some offense, which I get. Tough to give up two quick ones like Askarov did, but I think he’s been pretty good, actually. Lots of big saves to keep the Sharks in sight of game.

Graf penalty: Looked like Poehling took advantage of Graf’s stick being under him, but that’s just a smart play, in the end.

Carlson goal: Looks like that’ll do it. Goodrow had a chance to clear, Carlsson came from side, forcing a forehand, couldn’t get it through Carlson. Then Carlson lined up a blast that beat Askarov.

Mukhamadullin goal: Shakir can fire it. Good patience and vision by Toffoli to wait on him.

Carlson goal: The Ducks are in a different place than the Sharks, they felt they could trade a first for Carlson, who I’m sure the Sharks could’ve used, and I would imagine they eyed at the Deadline. But tonight was a reminder, boy, could’ve used that guy. I think Grier made the right move holding on to his firsts, but boy, the defense has been exposed the last two games.
