Durbin has started 41 of the Red Sox’s first 45 games at third base, but interim manager Chad Tracy decided to give Nick Sogard the start after being recalled on Friday when Trevor Story as placed on the injured list.

Before Sunday’s game, Tracy said he felt like it was a good time to get Durbin a day off.

“It seemed like a good day to give Durbin a breather, and get Sogey in there against Holmes and see what he can do,” Tracy said pregame on Sunday, via MassLive. “The big thing about Sogy is that he can help us in a lot of ways).”

Durbin is hitting .165 this season and is 6-for-40 in the month of May, as the third baseman has struggled to hit, which is a concern for the Red Sox.

So, with Durbin struggling, Tracy hopes to get some days off to find breathers and allow him to try and reset.

“He’s just struggling,” Tracy said. “I think you guys know that and I think he knows that. You see little flashes at times. He’s just struggling and the ball is getting in on him some. Working on timing and things like that. We’ve just got to keep pushing along and find breathers for him when we can.”

The Red Sox acquired Durbin this offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers.
