WARMINGTON: Toronto cops make early arrest at Walk with Israel

The Walk for Israel had not even begun and Toronto Police set the tone with its first arrest.

Toronto City Councillor James Pasternak says that he has been told by police that they will not allow the same ‘Gauntlet of Hate’ to hector Jews to occur at the Walk with Israel as it did one year ago.

“We have assurances from the Toronto Police Service that the weakness in last year’s walk will be addressed,” the York Centre Ward 6 councillor told the Toronto Sun .

And police are setting a tone that they mean it.

At 8:45 a.m., before anybody had taken the walk route from Wilson Ave. north on Bathurst St. to Sheppard Ave., as captured by former TPS officer and crime specialist Ross McLean, Toronto Police put a woman wearing a keffiyeh and hijab in handcuffs and took her into custody.

Cops were also moving in on protesters moving in with flags, and forcing them to retreat to go into a designated protest area.

As police prepared for this walk that started on Sunday morning and was expected to host 50,000 supporters of Israel, Pasternak said he has had positive messaging from police that they have a good plan in place.

“The mobs will not be allowed on both sides of the street at Bathurst and Sheppard to harass and incite the Jewish community,” Pasternak said.

Chief Myron Demkiw has publicly warned those who disrupt this walk and cross over into criminality; they will face criminal charges. He has said they have the resources in place to make arrests and make them “swiftly.”

There certainly is a lot of police and equipment on the ground, and the chief himself is directly involved. As reported by independent journalist Caryma Sa’d, the chief met with his officers at Bagel Plus early Sunday for breakfast and coffee and then it was out to the route.

“We will be looking after things today,” Demkiw told Rebel News’ Ezra Levant.

Police are also investigating the latest attack on a synagogue just south of the walk route. There is heightened tension and concern for security for the participants. Pasternak said that “ideally there will be a designated area” for demonstrators but the councillor said “anti-Israel protesters will not be allowed into the permitted area.”

Time will tell how it shakes out. The walk is expected to go for much of the day. Last year’s “wall of hate” occurred later in the day and resulted in many participants having to walk through a angry throng of hundreds of people hurling many antisemitic smears.

Pasternak says that should not be permitted this year.

“It’s time TPS says no to the angry mobs on our streets,” he said.

Demkiw has indicated that is the plan.
