BAD news for ‘late’ July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants
· The South African

It’s bad news for July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants, as the agency foregoes a four-week cycle, pushing payments back to later in the month. As such, beneficiaries of childcare-focused government grants should diarise Monday 6 July 2026 for payment.
Worse still, SASSA grants for Older Persons, Disability and War Veterans are still paid the week before. As such, the department decided to split its efforts over two weeks, when it could have easily delayed all payments to be inline with July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants …

DELAYED JULY 2026 SASSA CHILDREN’S GRANTS
The recent firing of minister Tolashe isn’t the only cause for concern for childcare grant beneficiaries in South Africa next month. Image: FileThis sort of unnecessary delay is symptomatic of the South African Social Security Agency being at sixes and sevens. That’s because, last month, President Ramaphosa fired minister Sisisi Tolashe and replaced her with interim minister Sindisiwe Lydia Chikunga. Sadly, it was too late to stop Tolashe from rubber-stamping the smallest grant increases in recent memory (just 3.4%) back in April 2026.
However, due to the impermanence of interim minister Chikunga’s position, we doubt we’ll see any meaningful improvement to July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants. In fact, SASSA has also revised income eligibility requirements for the SASSA Child Support. Previously, a single caregiver could earn R5 100 per month and still qualify.
Now that limit has increased to R5 800. For married couples looking after a minor, the figure increases from R10 200 to R11 600 per month. Tallied up annually, that is R69 600 (single person) and R139 200 (couple). Note that there is no asset portion to the means test, like with SASSA Old-Age Grants in July 2026.

At the same time, the agency also claims new maximum wait times of just 90 minutes at its offices. So, while you have to wait a few days more for July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants payment, at least the queues will be faster. This is all part of agency’s smart-queue management technology and self-service kiosks with Wi-Fi. Here beneficiaries can complete eLife and biometric verification without using their own data.
Likewise, certain SASSA Child Support Grants have been approved on the same day. Previously, the waiting period was closer to three months. This is assuming all your documents are in order first time. Don’t forget that July 2026 SASSA Children’s Grants also include SASSA Foster Child, SASSA Care Dependency, over and above Child Support. As titled, Foster Child is only for court-appointed homes that care for foster children. This increased this year by R40 from R1 250 to R1 290. And foster parents receive one grant per child.
As before, SASSA Care Dependency is for mentally and/or physically disabled children under the age of 18. As such, this pays the same as adult Disability. Meaning it, too, increased by R80 from R2 320 to R2 400 in April 2026. Disability, temporary or permanent, has to be determined by state-appointed doctor, officially acknowledged by SASSA. The SASSA Child Support Grant pays R580 per month, up by R20 from R560.
