As boxes were checked in Florham Park, rookie defensive lineman Darrell Jackson officially signed his first NFL contract, cementing his status as one of the newest members of head coach Aaron Glenn's roster.
The timing was fitting. While veterans and rookies took the field for another day of work, one of the organization's most physically imposing draft selections officially became part of the franchise's future plans.
For Jackson, the signing marks the latest milestone in a football journey that has included stops at Maryland, Miami, and Tallahassee before finally reaching the NFL. The fourth-round pick, selected 103rd overall in April's draft, believes his best football is still ahead of him.
Jackson arrives in New York with the type of size and physical traits that immediately attract NFL evaluators. The former Florida State Seminoles standout measured in at 6-foot-5½ and 315 pounds while showcasing a massive 7-foot-2 wingspan and 11-inch hands during the pre-draft process. Over his final two seasons with the Seminoles, he started 25 consecutive games and earned back-to-back All-ACC honorable mention recognition.
His production reflected his impact. Jackson totaled 80 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 7.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup during that stretch, helping establish himself as one of the more intriguing interior defensive line prospects in the draft class.
The Jets are just as excited as he is. If Jackson develops into the disruptive interior presence they believe he can become, Tuesday's signature may eventually be remembered as the first step toward something much bigger.
