Martina Navratilova, who witnessed the match from the Royal Box at Centre Court, took note of Andreeva’s behavior and explained why she found it particularly strange.

Why Martina Navratilova Found Mirra Andreeva’s Wimbledon Behavior ‘Strange’

No. 5 seed Andreeva faced a tough test in her second-round clash at SW19, as she locked horns with 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková. After two closely contested sets, the match headed into a decider, with Krejčíková taking the upper hand and serving for the match at 5-3, 40-0. Although Andreeva fought back fiercely and saved six match points, the Czech star ultimately claimed a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

The 19-year-old’s frustration was palpable after the loss as she hurled her racket at her chair and mouthed, “I quit,” to her team before shaking hands with Krejčíková at the net.

Andreeva’s disappointment carried over into her post-match press conference, where she broke down in tears while admitting that she would need a few days to process her emotions before turning her attention to the upcoming hardcourt swing.

“Sorry. It’s gonna take some time. Maybe a couple days. Then I’m gonna be back to practice for hard courts. I don’t know where the next tournaments are gonna be. I still need to talk to my team to see where I’m gonna play next,” Andreeva said.

Speaking on the Tennis Channel, Martina Navratilova revealed what she found “strange” about Andreeva’s behavior during the match, having observed that the Russian appeared to shut out her coach, Conchita Martinez, and the rest of her team while on the court.

“It was really strange. I said in the royal box there, I got my member badge. She never looked at Conchita or her box the whole match. She kept her back to them. She was playing really fast between points. Something happened because she was really yapping at the box. The first match, feeling the pressure, I think. And today it was the other way,” Navratilova said.

Navratilova further highlighted the 19-year-old’s emotional reactions during the topsy-turvy battle, describing her overall demeanor as “peculiar.”

“She was rushing the whole match. It went up and down. She was up 3-0 in the first set, loses it and then she’s up in the second. Anyway, it was going up and down and Andreeva kept it together but was on the edge of. She was starting to cry. Match points down. And then she comes back, almost serves and gets back in the match. It was very peculiar. I’m not sure what’s going on in that camp, but she was not a happy camper,” she added.

Andreeva also drew some criticism from fans for flinging her racket and failing to contain her emotions after the loss.

“I love Mirra Andreeva but throwing your racket and shouting i quit is unprofessional. Be Better,” one fan commented.

“Mirra Andreeva I love you but we have to control our emotions better you can’t keep crashing out like this,” said another.

With the North American hardcourt swing around the corner, Mirra Andreeva will look to quickly move on from her Wimbledon heartbreak. Meanwhile, Barbora Krejčíková will gear up for her third-round showdown against compatriot Nikola Bartůňková after upsetting the world No. 5.
