U.S. President Donald Trump says Canadians can blame our leaders for deteriorating relations with the United States.
In a media scrum inside the Oval Office on Tuesday, where he was asked about new tariffs on Canada and the Canadian wildfires, the president said he had nothing against the Canadian people, but has grown frustrated dealing with what he views as decades of stubborn Canadian leadership, adding that new tariffs aren’t a response to the wildfires.
“That’s separate,” Trump said. “We’re looking into that separately.”
The president added that without American help, Canada wouldn’t exist.
“Canada’s been very, very tough on us over the years. For many years, no other president has done anything about it,” Trump said. “I love Canada. I love the people of Canada. Many friends that live in Canada. But their leadership from Trudeau to current leadership, in all fairness to them, they need us to survive. Without us, there’s no way they can survive. But they’ve been tough over a period of the last 50 years.”
Ford responds
Trump’s latest comments on Canada come after Premier Doug Ford hit back at the president for calls for more tariffs on Canada in the wake of Northern Ontario wildfires.
“Our message to President Trump is that if he actually does his due diligence, one of the largest fires started from Minnesota,” Ford told reporters Monday.
Ford had more to say on Tuesday, holding fast to his ban on American booze and doubling down on his comments about Trump , calling him a “bully” in a response to a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, set to come into effect in 29 days, according to the White House.’
“I always say, we can’t keep rolling over for President Trump. We can’t back down,” Ford told reporters in Charlottetown.
