Dispatched to the scene

Fire crews from several stations were dispatched to the scene, where they encountered a challenging fire that caused the roof of the building to collapse.

According to City Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, emergency medical personnel performed CPR on an adult male who lived in the top-floor apartment, but he could not be revived.

“Medical staff performed CPR on an adult male who lived on the top floor, however CPR was terminated,” Carelse said.

Firefighters used a turntable ladder to direct water onto the flames from above as they battled to bring the blaze under control.

Investigation

Reports from the scene indicated that one firefighter was also taken to hospital after sustaining injuries while responding to the incident.

The fire was not yet contained at the time of the City’s latest update, with crews continuing to work to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and an investigation is expected once the scene has been declared safe.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as firefighting operations continue.
