Cleveland Browns training camp got chippy over the weekend, as two new additions got into a fist fight during a practice session.

Defensive end Jared Verse, who came to Cleveland earlier this offseason along with three draft picks via the trade of Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, got into a physical altercation with Browns’ first-round pick/offensive tackle Spencer Fano (No. 9 overall).

“Jared Verse and Spencer Fano at the center of a brawl. Verse threw multiple punches,” Zac Jackson of The Athletic reported via social media. “We knew it was coming here towards the end of six practices in six days. Both players are in for the next play.”

Jackson did not get into details on the cause of the scuffle, only noted the primary participants. However, video emerged on social media later in the day that could explain the problem.

Fano can be seen taunting Verse after the veteran DE jumps offsides during a practice rep.

The development is something of a surprised after head coach Todd Monken spoke Wednesday about how Verse was trying to help Fano specifically with his development throughout the week.

“I walked up to Jared and said, ‘Man, we’re so lucky you’re a Brown. I mean holy [expletive], how cool is this?’ Because he’s not only a great leader, but he also works his rear end off every day, and after practice he’s trying to get Spencer better,” Monken said Wednesday.

“I stood right behind him listening to what he was talking about, and it was bang, bang, bang, five reps in a row of his footwork, then talking through what he was going to do, how he could redirect, how he could use his hands and punch,” Monken continued. “It was within five reps I saw Spencer get better. It was him teaching like he was a coach, and it was awesome.”

Spencer Fano Battling With Dawand Jones for Starting Job

It is possible that Fano is experiencing some frustration as he bridges the gap between college and the NFL, as Dawand Jones has emerged as competition for Fano with regards to the starting lineup.

“I think there’s a world in a number of spots where a player could end up starting while you get the other players up to speed,” Monken said on Wednesday. “[Dawand is] in the best shape of his life. He’s out there competing, talking smack, seems to be in a really good place, and we want to reward that. We also want to bring Spencer along at a pace we feel is the best way to build his confidence.”

Training camp scuffles are not outside the norm given the intensity and frequency with which players are going at each other, all the while working to earn starting spots, spots on the roster or both.

That said, the organization praised Fano for his maturity coming out of the draft almost as effusively as it has praised Verse for his leadership role — so this could be something to watch if there are further issues between the two players in the near future.
