Eskom confirmed that City Power had paid off its debt of more than R5.25 billion, following intervention and a mediation process led under the auspices of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.
The final payment of more than R1.8 billion was received by Eskom on Friday, completing the settlement.
The dispute had raised concerns about potential interruptions to electricity supplies in the City of Johannesburg after Eskom initiated a process that could have resulted in the reduction or termination of supply to certain City Power supply points.
Eskom withdraws legal process
Following confirmation that the full outstanding amount had been paid, Eskom officially withdrew the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) process it had initiated on 17 May.
The process had involved Eskom notifying City Power of its intention to reduce or terminate electricity supplies to certain points within the Johannesburg metropolitan area because of the outstanding debt.
The settlement removes the immediate threat of such action and marks the conclusion of the debt dispute.
The resolution followed intervention and mediation involving the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, with the parties working towards an agreement to settle the long-running account.
The payment provides relief for Johannesburg electricity consumers, who had faced uncertainty over the potential impact of the dispute on electricity supply.
Eskom said the full settlement brings the matter to a close, while City Power can now continue focusing on the provision of electricity services across Johannesburg.
