The PMAC was filled with fans, former players, coaches, family and friends who came together to remember Bertman, who died Aug. 14 at age 88.
Bertman transformed LSU baseball into a national powerhouse during his 18 seasons as head coach, leading the Tigers to five national championships and 11 College World Series appearances. He later served as LSU's athletics director from 2001 to 2008.
Former players from each of Bertman's five national championship teams were represented at Tuesday's celebration.
“I got to spend some precious moments with Coach and he was himself,” the former player said. “He recognized who I was.”
Bertman's influence also extended beyond baseball. During his time as athletics director, he helped shape the future of LSU's athletic programs.
His family and close friends held a private ceremony earlier Tuesday before the public celebration at the PMAC. LSU opened Tuesday night's event to fans, giving the broader LSU community an opportunity to remember Bertman together.
As those closest to Bertman reflected on his life, the focus remained on the legacy he left behind.
“So, the legacy he began to see in his own life will continue for many years to come,” one speaker said.
