Less than a week after North Carolina officially began its season with a win over TCU, they will now be without their general manager going forward.
Lombardi Faced Investigation
Lombardi, who has worked with Bill Belichick across intermittent stints spanning nearly 40 years, beginning with the Cleveland Browns in the late 1980s, was placed on administrative leave while the university launched an internal investigation.
“The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has placed Michael Lombardi, general manager for the Carolina football program, on paid administrative leave, effective immediately,” UNC said via statement. “As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits.”
ESPN’s Pete Thamel followed up with a report that the decision to place Lombardi, who is in the second year of a three-year deal that pays a base rate of $1.5 million per year, on leave stemmed from a complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee.
Lombardi Resigns
While the investigation has not yet concluded, it seems that Lombardi will no longer be working with Belichick and North Carolina.
According to a report from college football insider Pete Thamel of ESPN, Lombardi has resigned.
“Sources: UNC football GM Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position. He’d been on paid leave in the wake of an internal investigation,” Thamel wrote in a post on X.
North Carolina is set to play its second game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 13, when they play host to East Tennessee State in their home opener as they look to begin the season 2-0.
