A late goal from Sam Surridge denied Lionel Messi the decisive strike as the top-of-the-table MLS clash between Inter Miami and Nashville SC ended 2-2.

Surridge grabbed his second of the game in stoppage-time to claim a point and maintain Nashville’s nine-point cushion over Miami at the top of the Eastern Conference.

The former Stoke and Nottingham Forest striker put the visitors ahead after just four minutes, beating Casemiro to a pass from Andy Najar and finding the target.

Defender Reed Baker-Whiting headed a Messi corner into his own net for the equaliser, with the Argentina forward sending a free-kick wide before half-time.

But he made no mistake just after the hour, latching on to Rodrigo De Paul’s pass and finding the bottom corner from outside the box for his 19th league goal of the season.

Luis Suarez hit the post as Miami chased a third, while Messi had another late effort cleared off the line.

But Surridge had the final say, finding the net from close range for his 15th goal of the season as Miami conceded a late equaliser for the second successive match.

Miami host Mexican champions Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup on Wednesday.
