Following Minnesota’s loss to New York, rookie Olivia Miles didn’t hold back when asked about the physical defense she faced all night. Frustrated by the constant contact and lack of whistles, Miles brought up how drastically the officiating standard seems to have shifted since opening night.
Talking to reporters after the game, she laid out her frustration with the changing calls: “They were calling it one way at the beginning of the season and now it’s like a free-for-all… it’s frustrating at times when you feel like you’re getting hounded everywhere.”
However, she isn’t the only player in the WNBA showing frustration at referees.
WNBA fans respond to Olivia Miles’ referee comments
When Olivia Miles spoke out about WNBA referees after Minnesota’s loss, it didn’t take long for fan reactions to flood social media.
Instead of focusing solely on the whistle, supporters quickly called out a familiar double standard, asking how differently the sports world would react if Caitlin Clark had said the exact same thing.
This fan kicked things off: “Welcome to Caitlin’s world since 2024!!!!”
“She couldn’t handle the Caitlin Clark treatment from the players and refs.” Another said.
The theme continued: “She should try being guarded like Caitlin Clark is. If that happened, Miles would quit.”
“CC been getting this treatment since day 1. Adapt and move on. Future is bright.” This supporter feels like there’s a lot more to come for Miles.
Another fan added: “Welcome to the Caitlin Clark treatment. Now imagine that happening all season long.”
“Imagine if Caitlin said this when she was frustrated.” This last fan said.
Caitlin Clark has faced a relentless brand of physical defense since stepping into the WNBA, regularly absorbing off-ball shoves, hard screens, and uncalled contact, from Chennedy Carter’s viral hip-check to getting shoved to the floor by Marina Mabrey after taking a shot to the eye.
For Miles, who is still in her rookie season in the WNBA, it’s a sign of things to come, but also a compliment of how good she is.
