Uttarakhand SIR: Around 9 lakh names deleted from final voter list

The names of around 9 lakh persons were deleted from Uttarakhand’s final voter list published on Saturday following the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, The Hindu quoted the state Election Commission as saying.

The number of voters in the state reduced to 71.5 lakh from 79.6 lakh before the exercise began, a decrease of about 10.1%.

Uttarakhand is among the 19 states and Union Territories where the voter roll revision is being carried out in the third phase of SIR.

On Saturday, Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer BVRC Purushottam said the final roll included 1.2 lakh newly enrolled voters, The Hindu reported.

“Compared with the draft roll published in July, the number of electors has risen by about 25,000, as 1,04,708 names were deleted following claims and objections, while more than 1.29 lakh names were added,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

The state accepted claims and objections until August 13, while hearings and disposal of cases continued until September 28, ahead of the publication of the final roll on October 3.

In 2025, the first phase of the exercise was conducted in Bihar. It was extended to 12 states and Union Territories in the second phase in late 2025 and the first half of 2026.
