LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin is not ingratiating himself to NCAAF fans after a rough start to his tenure as LSU HC after his controversial exit from Ole Miss.

LSU travelled to Kroger Field in Lexington, Kentucky, for a game against the unranked Wildcats, who picked up an upset 53-54 OT win over the No. 10-ranked Tigers.

Despite coming into the game as nearly 10-point favourites with Kiffin in an away stadium where he had never lost a game, multiple defensive issues and lapses by Kiffin led to an eighth straight loss against SEC opponents for the Tigers.

Lane Kiffin had to be rushed off the field as angry fans swarmed him

After the costly intra-conference 35-34 OT loss which might have killed the Tigers’ postseason hopes in October itself, Kiffin had to be protected from angry fans who rushed the field to flip off the coach as security pushed people out of the way to create a safe path.

Kiffin has been among the most controversial figures in college football over the last two seasons for the circumstances of his Ole Miss exit and tough start to the 2026 season.

This loss means LSU’s record through six games is 4-2, with both losses being high-profile close games that Kiffin’s Tigers could have sealed with better execution. The other loss is to his alma mater, Ole Miss.

There are very real concerns around the Tigers’ ceiling this season, as both their losses have come away from home and to opponents that are perceived to be weaker than other conference heavyweights, such as Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.

The Tigers themselves were perceived as one of these heavyweights before their second loss to underdogs in a month, with LSU and Kiffin needing to go basically undefeated for the rest of the regular season to earn a postseason berth.
