The captain missed last weekend’s 5-1 win at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League having been injured in training in the days leading up to the game.

The 26-year-old is undergoing rehabilitation at the club’s Cobham training base and will miss at least the next several weeks, beginning with Saturday’s trip to Everton.

A club statement read: “Everyone at Chelsea wishes Reece a speedy recovery and will support him on his road to return.”

James has suffered multiple injuries over the past few seasons which have caused him to miss significant periods.

Last season his minutes on the pitch were carefully managed by the club and he enjoyed his best run of games for several years, culminating in his selection for England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

James was among one of the five players to withdraw from England duty during the most recent international break and now looks set to miss the next international window when England will face Croatia at Wembley on November 12 and an away game against Spain three days later.
