Cole Custer recorded an impressive fifth-place finish in Sunday's YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, delivering one of his strongest performances of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season. The Haas Factory Team driver qualified 20th but was required to start at the rear following unapproved adjustments to his Chevrolet.

Despite that setback, Custer steadily worked his way toward the front while navigating the unpredictable drafting conditions. His team capitalized on the changing race circumstances, keeping the No. 41 Chevrolet competitive as several established contenders experienced problems.
Custer avoided elimination in the two major accidents, including the 15-car crash with five scheduled laps remaining that dramatically reshaped the running order. When the race restarted in overtime, he was positioned to capitalize on the aggressive battles ahead.
He survived the final-lap shuffling and crossed the finish line fifth, completing all 189 laps. The finish marked Custer's first top-five result of the season and gave Haas Factory Team a significant bright spot.
Custer remains 32nd in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings with 439 points, having missed the championship Chase. With two races remaining, he will attempt to carry his Talladega momentum into Martinsville and Homestead-Miami while finishing his season on a positive note.
