Cayden Daughtry, NaVorro Bowman Jr. and Co. will try and keep that streak alive. Follow in the footsteps of previous Team USA U17 World Cup MVPs Cameron Boozer, Jalen Green, Collin Sexton, Malik Newman, Jahlil Okafor and Bradley Beal.
Daughtry is one of the newer additions to Illinois' 2027 recruiting board. The 6-foot point guard is a five-star prospect in the class and is coming off a junior season that saw him lead Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.) to a 24-1 record and a second straight FHSAA Class 3A state title. Daughtry earned MaxPreps Third Team All-American honors after averaging 26.5 points on 55/37/86 shooting to go with 5.2 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game for the Eagles.
Bowman, the son of the former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders linebacker of the same name, had a standout junior season of his own for Notre Dame (Calif.). The 6-4 guard averaged 22.5 points, five assists and 4.9 rebounds for the 22-win Knights.
Team USA will open U17 World Cup action with a 9:30 a.m. group play game against France. Italy and Japan are also in Group A, with the U.S. playing the former at 6:45 a.m. Sunday and the former at 4 a.m. Tuesday.
The Team USA roster is loaded with the sons or younger brothers of several NBA players. Beckham Black is the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black. The notable sons includes Duke-bound 17-year-old Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje (Ruben), Mason Collins (Mardy), JJ Crawford (Jamal), Erick Dampier Jr. (Erick) and AJ Williams (Aaron).
