‘Bad decision after bad decision’: Criticism mounts for Drake Maye after loss

The New England Patriots suffered a 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL’s season opener on Wednesday night, and it was certainly a performance that Patriots quarterback Drake Maye will want back.
In the game, Maye threw three second-half interceptions that allowed the Seahawks to overcome a 10-0 deficit and cost his team a chance to tie or win the game at the end of regulation.

Maye Threw Three Picks
With the Patriots leading 10-3 late in the third quarter and driving into Seahawks territory, Maye threw his first interception on a deep pass. The Seahawks turned the possession into a touchdown.
On the very next possession, Maye threw another interception on a third-and-long, giving Seattle possession of the ball in Patriots territory. The Seahawks would turn that into a field goal to take a 13-10 lead.
On the team’s last offensive possession of the game, Maye threw another interception as he tried to force the ball into the end zone on third down. The pick cost his team a chance to kick a game-tying field goal with just seconds left on the clock.
Ultimately, the team’s three final possessions ended in interceptions from Maye.
“I lost patience, and it cost us. Decisions that cost us the game on my part… You can’t have those. It’s unacceptable. I gotta get back to work, because that wasn’t how I play football,” Maye said after the game.
“It’s a long season. Gotta hold your head up high,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said of Maye’s performance. “We have nothing but the utmost confidence in him.”
‘It’s bad news’
Needless to say, this performance from Maye sparked a lot of reactions on social media.
“Drake Maye sucking against real teams in big spots makes me very uncomfortable. It’s bad news. But we need to confront uncomfortable thoughts and accept them. We grow when we think about uncomfortable things and we don’t run from them,” wrote Matt McCarthy of NESN.
“Call me a hater, I just don’t see what everyone sees in Drake Maye. Seems like a slightly above average game-managing QB,” wrote Terrance of the Mallory Bros Podcast.
“I’m going to throat punch anyone who ever again puts Drake Maye on a ranking list above Brock Purdy,” wrote Dontay Atkinson of The Morning Line.
“Drake Maye looked bad in the playoffs. Looked worse in the opener,” wrote Vic Lombardi of Altitude TV.
“Yea, Drake Maye sold this one! Bad decision after bad decision in the second half. The progression isn’t linear. The kid will bounce back. He’s made of the right stuff, but tonight wasn’t his night. Last throw was inexcusable,” wrote Ryan Clark.
We’ll have to see how Maye bounces back from this performance next week.
