Spalletti admits Juventus performance was a tale of two halves

Luciano Spalletti saw Juventus deliver an impressive first half against Lecce before their performance declined after the break. The Bianconeri secured a 2-0 victory, but the contrast between the two halves will give the manager plenty to consider as he looks to improve the team’s consistency.

Juventus entered the match under considerable pressure following a difficult run of results. Reports suggested that Spalletti could face dismissal if his team failed to win against Lecce and Genoa, making the three points particularly important for his future at the club.

The players were also under pressure to deliver stronger performances after struggling in recent weeks. They responded positively in the opening half, showing greater intensity, confidence and attacking intent as they took control of the contest.

Spalletti praises Juventus’ first half

The Juventus manager would have been pleased with the quality his players displayed before the interval. Weston McKennie opened the scoring in the 29th minute, while Douglas Luiz added a second in the 41st minute to give the visitors a comfortable advantage.

Their performance reflected the kind of intensity and determination that supporters have been demanding. Juventus moved the ball effectively, created difficult situations for Lecce and looked capable of adding further goals during a dominant opening period.

However, the second half presented a different picture. The Bianconeri became less convincing in possession, lost control of the game and allowed Lecce to grow in confidence. Their decline raised questions about their ability to maintain the same level throughout a match.

Speaking via Calciomercato, Spalletti assessed both halves and explained why Juventus adopted a more cautious approach after the break.

“Tonight they played a very serious first half, a high-level one, like a top-tier, tough team, a team that wanted to win the game. The satisfaction beyond the 2-0 is that we created difficult situations with a sequence like we did in the first half. Too many times we lacked the most precise pass that would have put us in a position to take the lead after our dominance in possession of the ball. In the second half, we dropped back, managed things a bit, lost a few timid balls, and they came back. But then it was 2-0, and the important thing was not to overextend ourselves and give them space.”

Juventus must build on the result

Spalletti acknowledged that his side became more passive after half-time, but emphasised the importance of protecting their two-goal advantage rather than giving Lecce opportunities to respond.

The victory provides some relief amid the uncertainty surrounding his position. However, Juventus will need to produce more complete performances in their upcoming fixtures if they are to maintain momentum and ease the pressure on their manager.
